The Dua of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

 “Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.” (Quran 2:201)

This is one of the most well-known duas in the Quran, which was made frequently by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This all-encompassing prayer is used to ask Allah for all that is good both inwardly and outwardly, in this life and the next. This includes the believer’s wants and needs, such as health, sufficiency, doing good deeds, receiving beneficial knowledge, and having strong faith and good moral character.

The Dua of Ibrahim (as)

“My Lord! Make me and those [believers] of my descendants keep up prayer. Our Lord! Accept my prayers. Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the judgment will come to pass.” (Quran 14:40-41)

This dua made by Ibrahim can be used to pray for one’s family and all of the believers in the world. Here Prophet Ibrahim asks Allah to allow his descendants to maintain their prayers, and to forgive his parents and believing people on the Day of Judgement. Likewise, Muslims can use this dua to pray for family and for other Muslims.

The Dua of Zakariyya (as)

“My Lord! Grant me—by your grace—righteous offspring. You are certainly the Hearer of [all] prayers.” (Quran 3:38)

Despite his senior age, Zakariyya asked Allah for children with full faith that Allah could and would make it happen for him. Not only did he ask for offspring; he asked specifically for righteous offspring. Muslims can use this dua when praying to be blessed with children.

The Dua of Ibrahim and Ismail (as)

“Our Lord! Accept [this] from us. You are indeed the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” (Quran 2:127)  

This dua was made by Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail while they were erecting the House of Allah, the Kaa’ba. Rather than assume their act of worship would be received, they prayed and asked Allah to accept it. This serves as an important reminder to supplicate to Allah when performing good deeds to ask Him to accept one’s efforts.

The Dua of Asiyah (ra)

“My Lord! Build me a house in Paradise near You, deliver me from Pharaoh and his [evil] doing, and save me from the wrongdoing people.” (Quran 66:11)

This dua was made by Asiyah, the wife of the Pharaoh of Egypt. She had accepted Islam and, because she refused to obey her husband’s commands to reject her faith, he ordered that she be tortured. She offered this prayer while being tortured. Allah showed Asiyah her house in Paradise and she died smiling while looking at her future home. Muslims can use this dua to continually ask Allah for Paradise and for His deliverance from people’s oppression and maltreatment.

Dua for Spouse & Offspring

“Our Lord! Bless us with [pious] spouses and offspring who will be the joy of our hearts, and make us models for the righteous.” (Quran 25:74)

This Quranic dua is part of a series of instructions from Allah for the believers, which He says will result in such people being rewarded with a high position in Paradise. This dua can be used to ask Allah for pleasing, righteous spouses and offspring.

The Dua of Yusuf (as)

“[O] Originator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Guardian in this world and the Hereafter. Allow me to die as one who submits as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.” (Quran 12:101) 

Although Prophet Yusuf had attained a position of authority and had achieved his goal of reuniting with his family, he did not forget to ask Allah for a good ending. Yusuf begins this dua by calling upon Allah as both the Creator of everything and his guardian in both worlds. He asks Allah to allow him to die as a Muslim in submission to Him and to allow him to be amongst the pious in Paradise. Muslims can use this dua of Yusuf to supplicate for the same.

The Dua of Yunus (as)

“There is no god [worthy of worship] except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly done wrong.” (Quran 21:87)

This verse contains a prayer of repentance from Prophet Yunus. When his community rejected his attempts to call them to Islam, he left without Allah’s permission instead of remaining steadfast and continuing to spread the message. He ended up in the belly of a whale, where he made this dua reaffirming his belief in the oneness of Allah and admitting to his wrongdoing. Allah heard the dua of Yunus and rescued him. Muslims can use this dua when repenting along with asking for Allah’s forgiveness.

Dua for Guidance & Mercy

“Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after you have guided us. Grant us Your mercy. You are indeed the Giver [of all bounties].” (Quran 3:8) 

This is the dua of people who are firm in knowledge. Rather than being amazed at themselves for all that they know, they are recognizing that their knowledge has only been gained with Allah’s mercy and permission. They are supplicating to Allah, asking Him to keep them on the correct path and remain merciful to them. Muslims can use this dua to ask Allah to continue to keep their hearts firm in Islam, and to request His continued mercy.

Dua for Perseverance

“Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance, and let us die while submitting [to You] as Muslim.” (Quran 7:126) 

This dua was made to Allah by a group of sorcerers who Allah guided to the truth through a competition with Musa. The Pharoah threatened to torture them in an attempt to convince them to denounce Allah, but they refused to do so. Instead, they accepted the persecution for the sake of their newfound faith in Allah. In this verse they supplicate to Allah, asking Him to allow them to remain strong through the ordeal and to die as Muslims in submission to Him. Muslims can offer this dua in times of calamity to ask Allah for perseverance, and to remain believers and die as Muslims.
