Signs, designation and values of the night of Qadr

Allah says in the Qur’an: “Verily We sent it (the Qur’an) down on the night of Qadr, and what do you know about the night of Qadr, the night of Qadr is more valuable than a thousand months…”[1]

In this verse, Allah the Exalted confirms the importance of the night of Qadr and that the believers should know when that night is and with what type of worship they should spend that night, therefore in the following we will mention the hadiths that explain when the night of Qadr is Cadre:

Imam Bukhari transmits in his Sahih from Abu Said al-Khudri, may God be pleased with him, the Messenger of God – peace and mercy of God be upon him, said: “Take hold of the last ten days of Ramadan.”

When is the night of Qadr?

Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him, was among the companions who believed that the night of Qadr is on the twenty-seventh day, it was narrated from Umar, may God be pleased with him, that one day he gathered the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him, and he also took Ibn Abbas with him, may Allah be pleased with him, but he was still a young boy, so the elders from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and may God’s mercy be upon him, they complained to Umar, may God be pleased with him, about why he had taken Ibn Abbas with him when he was still a child. Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – replied that Ibn Abbas is a young man who has a wise heart and a tongue that asks a lot. Then to prove this he asked the companions about the night of Qadr and they agreed that from what is known is that this night is in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. After listening to Umar – may God be pleased with him – the companions turned to Ibn Abbas – may God be pleased with him, and said:

– What do you think? – Ibn Abbas answered:

I will guess when it is, indeed the night of Qadr is the twenty-sixth day. – Omar – may God be pleased with him, said: But how do you know that it is the twenty-seventh night? – He said: Verily Allah created seven heavens and seven earths, He made the days of the week seven, and He created man from seven, He made the Tawaf seven, He also made the Saijin seven, the number of pebbles that are thrown in Jamerat he did seven. – And from these facts, Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him – thought that the night of Qadr is the twenty-seventh night.

The truest opinion is that the night of Qadr is in the last ten days of the odd nights of the month of Ramadan and that it moves every year.

This is the opinion of Imam Nawawiu, may Allah have mercy on him, who says: It has been clarified for us and we have chosen the opinion that the night of Qadr moves every year between the nights of the last ten days of the month of Ramadan, this is because the hadiths that have come down about this issue are different and there is no other way for their union except by saying that it moves between the last ten days in odd nights of the month of Ramadan.[2]

3 – The value of praying on this night

The importance of praying the night prayer on the night of Qadr can be seen in the part of the verse where Allah says: “The night of Qadr is more valuable than a thousand months”. [3] Which means that the reward of praying on this night to Allah is more valuable than worshiping Allah for approximately 83 years and three months in a row. The Messenger of Allah, may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him, even says: “Whoever prays at night on the night of Qadr, believing and hoping for Allah’s reward, his previous sins are forgiven”.[4]

4 – Naming this night

Regarding the name of this night, the great scholar Sheikh Uthejmini, may God have mercy on him, says:

– The first point is that this night was named by the frame that shows the value and high position that this night has, as it is used when it is said about someone that he has a high position.

– The second point is that on this night the determination of what will happen throughout the year takes place.

– the third point is that worship during this night has a high position, i.e. its importance is great, as it came in the hadith of the Messenger of Allah – peace and mercy of Allah be upon him: “Whoever prays nightly on the night of By believing and hoping for Allah’s reward, Qadr is forgiven his previous sins. [5] For these reasons Allah called it “the night of Qadr” because this night has a very high position with Him and that Allah forgives many sins and covers many faults in this night, it is called the night of forgiveness as it came in the aforementioned hadith .

In addition to the night prayer, on this night the true believer should add dua (prayers) and isrigfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah). Because dua itself is worship, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, says: “Dua, that itself is worship (worship)”. Allah also says in the Qur’an: “Says your Lord, pray to me and I will answer you”.[6] The Messenger of Allah – may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him – said: “Indeed your Lord is alive, the noble is ashamed of his servant when he asks him to return his hands empty”. And in another hadith, the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him, says: “Indeed, one does not reverse the appointment of Allah except by will and does not increase life except by good manners.”

Some of the signs of the night of Qadr are:

1- In its morning, the Sun rises without rays, as it has come in the hadith from Ubay ibn Ka’b – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Messenger of Allah – peace and mercy of Allah be upon him – said about the Sun: “On the morning of the Night of Power, the sun will rise without a ray (it is like) a pool of water until you rise.”[8]

2- Angels descend on Earth with kindness, blessings, mercy and forgiveness.

3- It is a night clean from various evils as well as from injuries, worship is added to it and that night is salvation from the fire of Hell as well as peace until morning. Allah says in Surah Qadr: “Peace is that (night) until morning”.[9]

4- It is narrated by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him, said: “The night of Qadr is an average night, it is neither cold nor hot and the morning sun rises pale red”.[10]

5- It is transmitted by the mother of the believers, Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that she asked the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him: “O Messenger of Allah, what do you want to do if you experience the night of Kadri? – the Messenger of Allah – may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon him – answered: “Say: O my Allah! You are a great and noble forgiver, you really love forgiveness, so forgive us”.[11]
